What is PRP?

PRP is Platelet-Rich Plasma, the largest component of blood that carries water, electrolytes, hormones, proteins, and nutrients to cells in the body. During a PRP therapy, your own blood is collected, platelets are separated and reintroduced to your skin, scalp or joints through using small injections. Stem cell turnover is then stimulated, and in turn, collagen and elastin production is ramped up. PRP can help provide a smoother and more youthful complexion, can treat mild-to-moderate hair loss and can also assist in injury recovery and mitigate symptoms of osteoarthritis in the knee.

How Does PRP Work?

A PRP treatment uses blood drawn from the patient’s arm. The amount of blood drawn depends on the size of the treatment area, as well as the type of treatment being administered.

The patient’s blood is collected in vials and placed in a centrifuge to separate platelets that are used in treatment. The purpose of this procedure is to separate the components of the blood that are beneficial to healing from those that are not. One of the aims of producing PRP is to isolate growth factors that increase collagen production.

The separated plasma is put into syringes. Through this process, the plasma is then transformed into a gel that can be spread over your skin as a mask or can be injected into and around the area of treatment or injury. This stimulates the rejuvenation process and promotes collagen growth.

When used for aesthetic purposes, PRP can help smooth and tighten the skin while softening wrinkles. You will begin to notice results within the first two weeks following your treatment, with results continuing to develop for months. Results can last for one to two years. In order to maximize your new healthy glow, we recommend three treatments spaced out over the course of several weeks. Regular maintenance appointments are recommended.

For PRP knee injections, tissue healing is accelerated by the activation of a high concentration of platelets into the area of the injury.

What Happens During a PRP Consultation?

Your treating nurse and our medical director will review the intake forms that you complete in advance of your appointment. This review is used as a starting point to discuss your concerns and treatment goals.

Your nurse then assesses the area you wish to have treated. We always review the benefits and risks of the treatment, as well as any potential complications.

Our goal is that the consultation will make you feel educated and empowered to decide if a PRP treatment is right for you.

Consultations can be done at our downtown Toronto PRP clinic or virtually from the comfort of your couch!

What Can I Expect During My PRP Treatment?

Our medical director will review your medical history, current health profile and medications prior to your appointment. This is to ensure that the treatment is right for you. You’ll also have an opportunity to discuss the results you’re looking to achieve.

The treatment itself involves a series of small injections made to different the treatment area(s). If you’re receiving a Vampire Facial, you will also have a microneedling treatment performed.

Pearl on King puts your well-being and comfort above all else. Our team has years of experience and education in the field. This means you get the safest and most professional care available. Not only that but you’ll enjoy our professional service in a discreet and relaxing setting.

Is PRP Safe?

PRP Toronto treatments are considered safe and minimally invasive. Because the patient’s own blood is used in PRP treatments, complications like allergic reactions are rare and there is no risk of transmissible infection.

Side effects are possible but are minor and depend on the individual. Redness and tenderness of the treated skin are common after the procedure and will diminish within several hours or days of the treatment. Your treating nurse will provide you with post-care instructions.

Please complete your health history forms prior to your appointment. Our nurses will review your health history to ensure that the treatment is appropriate for you.

Pearl on King uses Health Canada-approved products and devices for all of our treatments.

What Are My PRP Aftercare Steps?

Although the treatment does not require any downtime, there are important steps to follow after your appointment. Don’t lie down, exercise or take a hot shower for at least four hours after your treatment. Avoid putting pressure on the injection site caused by rubbing, massaging the injection site or sleeping on the treatment area. Do not take blood-thinning medications or drink alcohol for 24 hours. Avoid skin treatments for seven days after your treatment. Do not expose the treatment area to direct sunlight.

How Long Does a Treatment Take?

A medical consultation and PRP treatment will usually take about 60-90 minutes. There is no prolonged downtime following the session. Your treatment professional will advise you of important steps that should be taken after your appointment.
